The results are in! I would like to proudly announce that all the responses were filled out the same day they were given, so thank you friends of mine. I have 6 responses plus my own since I also filled out the form for comparison reasons, so 7 answers for each question.
For sensory issues, I found a pattern with having one main sense that they could not stand. While everyone’s senses hindered them more than the average person, there most had one sense that would completely throw them off. For me was taste, while some others were smell, physical touch, and sound. The most hindering situation overall was a visually overstimulating situation, labeled as “Rate your sensitivity to sight. (a lot of things happening at once)” 6 out of 7 responses were 8 or higher.
Everyone who took the survey labeled themselves as having good grades (nothing below a C), but at the same time, no person expressed that they didn’t struggle in class. The most common issues, with each having 5 selected were late work, poor concentration, unable to complete work during class time, and not understanding the specific way they are being taught.
Not every question had constant results. One was rating your emotions, with 1 being “I barely express my emotions in my actions/body lang” and 10 being “Everyone knows what im feeling because all my emotions spill out out of my control.” The results for this question ranged from 2 through 9, with a slight trend towards more outwardly emotional. Another one without consistency is “How hard is it to connect with neurotypical peers?” With 1 being "Just like any other person. Small chit chat and get along just fine” and 10 being “HUH??? IDK WHAT TO DO HERE/ its very much a struggle” The answers here went from min to max, with an even smaller slight trend towards it being harder. Fake it till you make it I guess. But questions like these show that obviously, not every person with ASD is the same, and people with different strengths and weaknesses can still both be autistic.
Some questions were also written response. These were questions that needed more explanation, such as “How do you generally make friends?” Which the two methods I was given was “complete silence until someone talks to me” or “Intruding into nearby conversations.” Other written response questions were explaining how eye contact works for them, or any childhood signs or their condition. I also now have a list of a whole bunch of stims/repetitive behaviors.
With all this new wonderful information, I now both better understand some of my friends, and can build Kylie as a character. Using the traits I have gathered, I can mix and match which ones Id like to show in my major task (short film), and really get into her head as a do so. It also ensures that Kylie doesn’t end up just being a copy of me, and now I can utilize other traits. Now, which one of my friends do I force into this role..? :3c
