“So… where’s the rest?”, you might ask. And you’d be right to ask that. You see, Ive come across a bit of a crossroad in my story. I now have planned out how Kylie and Charlotte are going to meet, but to get to that final conversation, I need to show them actually becoming friends, which is easier said than done, especially in the 5 minuets I am limited to. People don't usually become friends after a single meeting, and people especially don’t get 100% comfortable spilling out all their depressing inner thoughts after a single outing.
Its even harder for autistic people to decide when they share a mutual friendship with someone since they lack the natural social cues to pick up on it. Some really might think that one really good interaction makes them immediate besties, while on the other end, someone might never properly address someone as their friend until the other does first in fear of making the wrong assumption, or simply not knowing they were considered friends before. And sure, Charlotte seems like the type of person to be the former, but Kylie is definitely the latter, and she’s the one that needs to be vulnerable.
This is where I’m stuck with two separate ideas for progression. The first idea is to have the conversation at the mall, probably just about when everyone is going to go home. This would have the story progress with the girls spending time at the mall. There would be more time to visually show Charlotte’s behavior and what Kylie finds so natural about it. Unfortunately, with this, their little talk at the end will have to be much less personal and a lot more awkward on Kylie’s part to stay in character, since they had only really met that same day. It will also be hard to say that she made a true friend in Charlotte, since once again, its only been a few hours.
On the other hand, instead of continuing at the mall in depth, I could create a montage of the two in different settings hanging out casually to show that their friendship progressed after that day. This would lack a lot more of the details, but in turn, I could have the scene at Kylie’s house, showing how close they’ve become, and would be able to have her be more vulnerable with Charlotte since they will have known each other for much longer. Cats are also easily accessible in this scenario so the specific inhuman aspect can be much more prevalent.
So what to do? Make my target audience group use their wonderful survey skills again and give their feedback! To make it simpler, I made a little pros and cons chart to provide a visual for the two sides. From there, I’ll have them each pick which they believe is the best option and go from there.
