Blog Post 14 - Target Audience

A target audience is the specific group of people a text is aimed at to interact with said text. This can be categorized by age, gender, background, interests, locations, conditions, and more. While my story is a fiction one, not based on a specific event that happened in real life, I still want my major project to be a proper reflection of real problems people with ASD struggle with in reality.

One obvious demographic is people with neurodivergence, specifically ASD. I want to make a story that people with ASD can see themselves in and really resinate with. Since the two main characters both have the condition, it makes sense that it would be part of my target audience.

Another piece is gender. From the start, I made my main character a girl. I did this because I felt it would be easier to accurately create a female main character rather than male one since I myself am a girl. Along with Charlotte also ending up as a girl, as well as all the survey takers being AFAB, it makes sense for the story to resonate more with girls rather than anyone else.

Age plays a role too. Kylie, Charlotte, myself, and all the survey takers are high school age, ranging from sophomore to senior. I don’t think, Ive actually mentioned it before this point, but it was my intention to make Kylie and Charlotte high school aged teens. High school is a bunch of new freedoms and changes, as it begins the real transition into independence and adulthood. New friends and connections are made too, which is again what Kylie is struggling with, so high schoolers going through a similar time is a part of my demographic as well.

The last thing I want to mention is interests. It may or may not fit with the previous three points, but someone with in interest in neurodivergence is also part of a target audience. Sometimes people consume a media not because it personally relates to them, but to learn about what is being discussed. Since I want my project to be a real accurate reflection, people curious about the condition of ASD can watch to try to learn from the perspective of a person with it.
