Blog Post 37 - Mall Filming Time!

First day of recording! Recording took place at the Tampa Premium Outlets from around 12pm to 4pm. Filming occurred in chronological order of the script. I brought my computer to pull up the script, as well as my story board for my friends to get a visual understanding of their positions. Since I am the director, main camera man, and an actor, I had to sure to balance all aspects of my job. When I needed to be in a scene, I got one of my actors that weren’t being used, positioned the camera for them, and told them when to start and stop.

(Me pulling out my story board)

Most scenes were fairly easy to shoot. Clips for conversation scenes consisted of simply putting the camera in place then hitting record. Tracking scenes were a bit more complicated, especially when the subjects had to walk towards the camera. In order to do these parts correctly, I had a member of my cast holding their hand to my back to make sure I wouldn’t fall back and stayed moving at the proper speed. POV shots were also relatively easy, just moving the camera along with your gaze as instructed.

(Me directing)

We did come across one problem in recording. Turns out Travis doesn’t actually have Project Sekai downloaded on his phone (He has it on his tablet). You might wonder “why not wait a minuet or two for the app to download?” Which is a simple solution for most apps. Unfortunately, Project Sekai can take up to an hour to download! Especially in poor connection like at the outlets. Some improv had to be done. Rather than playing Project Sekai, we switched the narrative to Kylie playing with a bracelet of her own. When I first made those bracelets, I made one of Travis’ favorite character to give to him, just for fun. He ended up wearing it to the recording session, so thats what we used as the main interaction tool instead.

Along with just the recording for the film, I also had my mom take pictures of me directing as behind the scenes content. I also recorded some behind the scenes content of my own, interacting with my actors.
