Blog Post 26 - Storyboard Explained (Scene 4)

Last part of my storyboard! Almost there!

A cut to a new character and environment is shown, which is also our first look at Charlotte. Charlotte and her mom are seen outside one of the stores, one that is generally more cramped and overwhelming, (which I’ll probably use a Bath And Bodyworks for). Her mom tells her that she’ll be going in, and for her to find a place to sit to wait for her outside, since she already knows Charlotte won’t want to go in. Charlotte agrees and begins to walk off. In a POV shot of her looking around for a place to sit, she spots Kylie in the distance, very concentrated on her rhythm game, and its clear that she’s now fully recovered from her previous panic. Charlotte, being nosey and feeling like she recognizes the game, gets a medium close up shot of her watching Kylie and walking closer, before once again showing Kylie playing on her phone, now with the game actually being visible. This creates an eyeliner match of Charlotte’s view.

A two shot is again used from the front, showing Charlotte watching from behind the bench as Kylie remains unaware of the other girl, too absorbed in her game to yet realize. Once done with the song, Charlotte decides to make herself be known by beginning to talk about and ask Kylie about the game, which obviously greatly startles Kylie, 100% not expecting some random girl to come up to her like this and start excitedly ranting about the rhythm game she was playing. A close up/medium close up of Charlotte is next to really emphasize how excited she is about this game and how passionate she is about it, really just wanting someone she can talk about it with. A similar close up/medium close up of Kylie is next. She’s visibly much more awkward, not really knowing how to act in this situation, but she does answer the questions she is given rather than stay silent, since she too is kinda obsessed with the game. The shots show contrast between the two girls and their personalities and expressions. Charlotte’s shot is also at a slightly low angle, making her seem more confident and proud, while Kylie’s is at a slightly higher angle, signaling her more reserved anxiety filled nature.

When Charlotte gets responses, she stands up straight and begins flapping her hands in excitement. The two shot returns to both show Charlotte’s action, and Kylie’s reaction. Hand flapping is a very common stim for autistic people, and is also quite noticeable, so seeing Charlotte do it so freely like nothing sparks Kylie’s interest, standing up as well. Before the conversation can continue, Kylie’s friends appear, having been looking for her. That main, phone call friend asks Kylie where she’s been this whole time and why she left them, concerned, but also slightly annoyed. Kylie doesn’t know how to explain herself at all, but her attention is instead caught by another girl in the friend group saying hello to Charlotte, calling her by name. Kylie is much more confused by the fact that one of her friends apparently knows who this stranger is, told that Charlotte goes to the same school as the rest of them, providing a bit of relief. Phone call friend, acknowledging that Kylie and Charlotte where having a conversation, somewhat getting along, introduces herself and asks Charlotte if she’d like to join the rest of them, hoping that she could help Kylie actually enjoy herself. After thinking about it, Charlotte accepts, but refuses to shake her hand, confusing the friend, but she doesn’t dwell on it.
