Blog Post 25 - Storyboard Explained (Scene 3)

Part 3 out of 4 of my storyboard, let's go!

Back with Kylie, the camera moves forward to make a close up shot of her face, this way emphasis will be put onto her panic. As the group walks into the food court, a POV shot is used to to see the mall through Kylie’s eyes once again, but this time, the looking around is more anxious and panicked to reflect her emotional state and increasing panic. The close up shot and POV shot would then repeat back and forth, getting more frantic each time with the noise only growing louder and louder until, she breaks out of it long enough to tell her friend that she’s leaving the area, making up some excuse, to which the friend doesn’t really mind, wondering whats going on. This is shown in a two shot in order to display both girls as well as how they react to one another at the same time. The sudden stillness of this two shot right after the back and forth will show that one one else is having this same internal panic that Kylie is, making her the outlier to their surroundings.

Once getting the ok from her friend, the scene cuts to a long shot of Kylie pushing open the doors to leave and speed walking out of the food court while covering her ears. The long shot is used to display Kylie’s full body language, clearly uncomfortable and full of nerves, while also contrasting with the rest of the mall environment like before. Everyone else is simply enjoying their day. Eventually, Kylie finds a quieter part of the mall and takes a seat. Still covering her ears, she takes some time to calm her breathing and get her senses under control. This part specifically is very much based off of the short film I have analyzed previously here, “Its Just A Five Minute Walk,” and how the main character of that film is able to walk herself somewhere and calm herself down. This part will also be filmed in handheld, which will naturally create a shaky effect to the shot for her original panic, then as she’s calmed, turn stabilized.

Kylie is then able to lower her hands and simply think about her situation. She doesn’t feel well enough yet to return to the food court, so she decides to stay where she’s at and relax for a bit longer. She wonders to herself if it would be rude to play on her phone while she continues to rest, but eventually talks herself into it as she’s been really obsessed with this game lately, and it’ll help her calm down faster so she can rejoin her group. The shot changes back to a POV one as Kylie pulls out her phone and starts up the rhythm game, her gaze now much more stable as she has the game to think about and concentrate on.
