Blog Post 9 - Preliminary Exercise

Let's take a real quick detour to focus on some camera work. My blog so far has put a lot of spotlight on my human characters, but the kitties are going to be just as important! My two pretty kitties, Oreo and Emmy, will be my actors/models.

For my first photo, I wanted to capture an extreme close up of one of my cat’s eyes. They say that eyes are the windows to the soul, and considering Kylie’s conflict, I thought it’d be something worth trying out. I chose Oreo for this shot due to her naturally more intense gaze compared to Emmy. I made it eye-level to properly focus on her eyes. Im quite happy with the detailed captured, since you can clearly see the pattern in her eyes and the texture of her fur. I do wish I could have gotten something more with lighting. I have another, similar shot in lower lighting, but her eyes were unfortunately not focused on the camera and it did not provide the same effect. Oh well, you gotta do your best when it comes to working with animals.

For my second Oreo photo, I wanted to show off just how majestic she looks. She’s rather fluffy for whats supposed to be a shorthaired cat. She also just loves posing for the camera. I placed Oreo’s head in line with the rule-of-thirds to ensure focus on her. Oreo also has great contrast with the background of the couch. This angle is once again at eye-level, but now that I think about it, I think a slight lower angle would have worked nicer to add a level of superiority to her.

Speaking of superiority, Emmy truly believes she’s the best thing thats ever happened to this world. She loves being tall as possible, often sitting at the tops of the cat tree. Wanting to capture this idea, I did a low angle shot of Emmy, in the rule-of-thirds like the previous to place focus. Her distant look almost seems like she’s looking off at her kingdom, AKA, the kitchen where she tries to steal anything edible or not. I quite like the composition of this shot. Her being taller than the pillars and being surrounded by them places further focus on her mightiness. This is definitely my favorite of the four photos. My only real complaint is her neck fur color somewhat blending into the top pillar color.

Lastly, I caught a photo of Emmy hiding underneath the cat tree. What a contrast compared to her first photo. Since it's been established that Kylie might want to run off and hide if things get too overwhelming for her, I thought catching a cat hiding could be something to try. Im quite happy that Emmy is clearly in the shadows. These past three photos have been quite flat with high-key lighting and little variation. Actually having Emmy in the dark sets a better mood. Once again, Emmy is in line with the rule-of-thirds to place focus. The angle of this shot is both high and canted/dutch. High angles often represent inferiority, which matched the mood of a scared kitten. Canted/dutch angles are when the camera is tilted to create a distorting or panicky effect. Im thinking about the idea of doing some sort of panic scene, so utilizing this type of shot could be something to think on. This photo could be clearer, and Emmy seems pretty fuzzy, so getting a better focused shot could be something to work on. But, for this context, I think it works fine.
