Blog Post 10 - Operation: Name a Friend

Back on the subject of characters, time to name Kylie’s new friend. Since it will be easier to cast another female actor, Im going to make this friend of hers also a girl, so a feminine name. Unlike Kylie, I didn’t have any base idea I wanted to jump off of. I just have two requirements. One, that it doesn’t resemble the sound of “Kylie”, and two, that it matches her personality.

In order to find such a name I thought of some one word character traits that match the friend I created. Confident, free, blunt, and emotional were the ones I came up with. So, time to hop onto the baby name website and find some names I like in each category.

Well, when I looked up names meaning confident, I instead got a bunch of names meaning things more like “warrior” or “powerful battler
” or “wise ruler.” Not exactly what I was going for. I did find the name Moxie through this, which means driven/energetic, but it ends with the “ē” sound, and it reminds me too much of the phrase. I did find that apparently the name Apple is a valid name on this site though. So is Orange. Thanks.

(Huh?? But honestly not the weirdest I've found)

For free, I liked a name that was kinda really on the nose. Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles, meaning “free man.”  One thing Id like to note is that its specifically “man,” as in, human. Kylie’s friend feels human while she does not. I think it could be a cool reference to the conflict. Another random thing is that Charlotte is a version of Charles, which is a version of Karl which sounds like Kyle/Kylie. Hooray! More connection without the names themselves sounding similar.

Instead of looking up names meaning blunt, I chose truth instead, it could represent how she isn’t afraid to be her true self, nor speak the truth. The name that stuck out to me here was Amita. The name can mean many things, from truth, to limitless, to friendship. I think it could be really nice on how it could signal how she doesn’t feel like she’s any less capable than anyone else, while also feeling like she doesn’t need to hide. The name also meaning friendship could be a cute nod to how she gets to be the friend that changes Kylie’s perspective.

With emotional, I’ll be honest, I just didn’t like any of the ones I found. None of them stuck out to me. Oh well.

So which name? Amita or Charlotte? In the end, I decided on Charlotte. Why? Because I think the name sounds cuter and I've been wanting to use that name for a character for a while now, so it goes to Kylie’s friend. Yippie! In the end, I think either name could have worked nicely, but Charlotte also has more parallels and comparisons with Kylie. Charlotte it is.
