As discussed before, a post card to be potentially given out at a film festival is one of my minor projects. Ive researched how to make my post card well, but moving back a bit, what exactly is a film festival?
Using the site Studiobinder as a resource, film festivals are events where visual media is screened at theaters for people to watch. Audience members can watch from the selection of film to see what upcoming creators are making, filmmakers can build connections with fellow artist, and if managers decided to attend, they could potentially be scouted out for their talent, growing their name and brand. Some festivals are very broad, having a large selection of different genres and themes in their catalog, while others like to focus on a specific category, such as location made, or the topic being used.
The main part of any film festival is the fact that they screen movies out to the public, from indie shorts to higher budget productions. A film festival is a great way to have some distribution, especially since people there know exactly what they’re there for. Mixers, Q&As, and panels may also be held, providing exposure. Mixers focus on the industry workers themselves, being social events where all sorts of directors, producers, actors, and more in the industry hang out. Attending one of these can get creators some connections and especially help beginner ones get a better feel for the work and work climate. Panels are also held for people in the industry, often bringing out professionals to share their tips and tricks to those attending. Q&As are more focused on the audience. They usually feature people who worked on a particular film, and open the floor for questions about it. Casual audience members can ask for further clarification on dominant reading, while aspiring creators can ask questions more along the lines of production process and advertising strategies. Some festivals even have award ceremonies to appreciate some of their films featured.
Film festivals can be reportedly hard to get into though, especially the larger ones, and since they often cost money to get into, the loss isn’t just a rejection, but a lowering of budget as well. Two tips for getting in that will be relevant to my project is “professional packaging” and “choosing the right festival.” Creating professional grade content on all parts of my project is something I always have to keep in mind, which is why its good to keep doing these research segments, and thats no different for my post card. When it comes to choosing the right festival, I plan on creating my own, since it feels strange eventually advertising on my Instagram that I got into a festival that I didn’t actually. Because of this, Ill need to evaluate my major project and decide from there how to name the festival to make it appropriate that they “accepted” my film to be screened.
